A Beginner’s Guide to Off-Roading Safety and Preparedness

Safety is the key to a fun off-roading experience. However, even with the best safety precautions, getting stuck is always a risk, so being prepared with supplies and the number of a towing company that helps vehicles in off-roading situations is essential. If you’re new to off-roading, keep this advice in mind so you can have a positive experience off the beaten track.

Forget Going as Fast as You Can

When you’re off-roading, you should only go as fast as you need to in order to get over the terrain. Although you may need to rev your engines to climb a hill, don’t put the pedal to the metal for the entire drive. Speed is the source of many off-roading accidents, and it increases your chances of damaging your vehicle and getting stuck. If you do get stuck, don’t try to speed your way out, as you run the risk of flipping your vehicle.

Use the Buddy System

You should never go off-roading alone, but ideally, you should never go with just one vehicle, either. Having two vehicles makes it easier to get back to the main road if you get in a jam, so you can call for a tow without being stranded in remote terrain. When you go off-roading, make sure someone who isn’t with your group knows where you plan to go and when you should be back, so they can call for help if you get stranded without a way to get out.

Pack for Emergencies

Having some basic supplies on hand, like a hand winch, tow strap, and first aid kit, will make it easier for you to manage any unexpected circumstances that may arise. Keep your phone charged, so you can call for help or a tow if you need it. Store some nonperishable food and some water in your vehicle, and bring a sleeping bag or blanket if you’re going too far off road to walk out if you get stuck.
