Spotting Signs of Problems with Your Car Battery

It is inevitable for batteries to wear out over time, but with all the power features in today’s vehicles such as power windows, heated seats, and charging ports for phones and DVD players, they tend to wear out faster. The day will come when your car won’t start at the most inconvenient time, so it’s best to pay attention to these warning signs that something is wrong with your car battery.

Check Engine Light

Unfortunately, many drivers ignore this light, but it is signaling that there may be something wrong with your car, including your battery. Check your user manual to see what the check engine light could mean for your vehicle.

Slow Engine

If you are noticing it takes a bit longer to get your car to start up, or your car doesn’t have as much get-up-and-go as it used to, your battery may be losing its charge, or the battery components could be worn out.

Electrical Issues

If you observe issues such as dimming lights, a radio that keeps cutting out when you turn on the A/C, or other power items in your car not working as well as they used to, this could be a hint that your battery does not have enough charge to keep up.

Corroded Connectors

Look at your car battery and the metal components. If you notice something resembling ash on the connectors on the top of the battery, this is a sign of corrosion which can cause problems, especially if you are needing a jump start.

If you have any concerns that your battery is experiencing problems, seek out a mechanic or someone who can test and inspect your battery to determine if replacing the battery is required.
