Preparing the Ultimate Emergency Kit for Your Car

Your towing company knows that breakdowns and other roadside emergencies can occur at any time. Particularly in Tucson and its surrounding areas, changes in weather and road conditions can put drivers at risk, even during daylight hours. Keeping an emergency kit in your car will ensure that you are prepared for any situation that may arise, whether you are close to home or on a cross-country trip.

Food and Water

If you are stranded without a way to contact help immediately, the two things you will need most are food and water. Keep a few large bottles of drinking water or several drinking water boxes in your car at all times. Nonperishable food items are best for a long-term emergency kit, but keep in mind that if you pack cans or difficult-to-open containers in your emergency kit, you should pack a can opener or pair of scissors with them as well.

Blankets

Although Tucson’s weather is warm during the day, the temperature often drops at night. Include at least one blanket in your roadside emergency kit to ensure you can stay warm and comfortable if you become stranded. Low-cost flannel or felt blankets can serve doubly duty as cushioning for objects in your trunk during everyday use, while ā€œspace blanketsā€ made from mylar are small, thin, and can fit into a very small space.

Lights and Batteries

Lights can help you visualize the surrounding terrain and alert oncoming traffic to your location at night. Every driver should have a heavy-duty flashlight in their emergency kit—store batteries and a spare bulb in a small plastic bag taped to the flashlight, rather than in the light itself. You can also keep glow sticks or self-lighting road flares in an emergency kit for added visibility after dark.
