How to Prevent Common Causes of Breakdowns

There are some common issues that cause breakdowns that may be preventable with regular maintenance. Don’t get stuck needing a tow. Here are some ways that you can prevent common causes of breakdowns.

Battery Problems

If your car is not starting or the lights in your car keep dimming, this could mean that your battery is dead or dying. If your car has been sitting for a while, or is older, the battery may be dead, or just old. One way to prevent your battery from dying is to make sure all lights in your vehicle are turned off. If your car will be sitting unused for an extended period, take it out for a drive. It is also a good idea to have your battery connectors checked during routine maintenance with a mechanic. Most batteries have only a 3–5-year guarantee, so you will want to replace your battery before it dies for good.

Wrong Fuel

It happens more often than drivers would like to admit, but it is very easy to put the wrong fuel in your vehicle, and this can result in serious engine trouble. The best way to prevent this is to double-check the pump you are using before you begin filling your tank. Pump nozzles used to be color-coded, but this is no longer the case depending on the gas station. If your vehicle uses gasoline, the diesel nozzle is not likely to fit your gas tank, but with E-85 you still have to be mindful of your selection.

Tire Damage

It can be difficult to predict or even prevent a tire puncture; however, there are ways to care for your tires to minimize the risks. Checking your tire tread regularly and keeping your tire pressure optimal can help prevent blunt objects from easily damaging your tires. It may be a good idea to keep fix-a-flat in your emergency kit for simple punctures. Another way to prevent unexpected damage is to avoid potholes, as well as puddles that could be hiding potholes.
