Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Summer

When most people think of seasonal car preparation, they think of winter weather and icy road conditions. However, summer brings weather extremes of its own, and it’s important that your car is ready to handle the heat. Before the temperatures soar, make sure your car is ready to go with the following tips. They could help you stay safer on the road and avoid having to call a tow truck in the middle of your summer adventures.

Test Your Air Conditioning

The last thing you want to experience is getting into your car on a hot summer day to find out that your air conditioning isn’t working. The easiest way to give your AC a trial run is to go for a drive and run the air conditioner. If it doesn’t seem to be cooling as effectively as it normally does, make an appointment to get it inspected. You could need a top-up on fluid, or there may be a bigger issue that you’ll want to get repaired before summer driving.

Stock Up on Emergency Supplies

A car emergency kit isn’t just for winter. Flash floods, storms, and extreme heat can all put you at risk in the event of a breakdown, especially if you are in a remote area. Make sure your emergency kit contains first-aid supplies, a flashlight and batteries, jumper cables, and roadside flares. You should also have a rain poncho, water, and nonperishable snacks. Although you hopefully won’t ever need it, you’ll be glad you have your kit, especially if you have to wait for a tow truck in the desert or on a remote mountain road.

Get a Full Car Tune-Up

The start of summer is a good time to take your car in for maintenance. Get all your fluids topped off, and have your brakes and battery inspected. Check your tires for signs of wear and tear, and get a rotation and alignment, if necessary. A tune-up will allow you to hit the road with confidence.
