Common Summertime Problems for Tractor-Trailers

Caring for your commercial vehicle is always important, but with hot summers and longer daylight hours, there are added risks to your vehicle. We want to share some common problems that, without regular maintenance, could result in a call for a tow for your tractor-trailer.

Air Conditioner Problems

Driving through the desert with windows down may be nice in the cooler months, but during the summer, you likely rely on that air conditioning. To keep your air conditioner from malfunctioning in the middle of a trip, you will want to make sure you are performing regular checks, especially at the beginning of summer, on the freon levels and refrigerant in your truck. Don’t forget to check the fans and filters, because those can affect air conditioning performance as well.

Engine Overheating

Engines can overheat at any time of the year, but the added heat from the summer sun can cause air around your engine to heat up, meaning there is no cool air to help your engine keep from overheating. To help your engine, check your coolant and motor oil levels. The oil helps to lubricate your engine and decrease friction. If you find yourself in a position where your engine is overheating, pull over as soon as it is safe to do so.

Tire Blowouts

Caring for the tires on your tractor-trailer is already important to staying in operation, but did you know that underinflated tires increase your chances of a blowout? If your tires are not at their optimum inflation level, paired with the hot summer pavement at high speeds, adds friction that can cause your tires to blow from overheating under pressure. Avoid excessive braking and make sure to inspect your tires regularly.
