Having your vehicle break down while you’re out on the road is always stressful and inconvenient, but breaking down at night can be dangerous, too. If you break down on a busy road or highway at night or in an area you don’t feel safe, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your car.
Immediately Assess the Safety of Your Surroundings
If possible, get your car to the side of the road and put your hazard lights on, or use reflective markers so other drivers will know there is a stalled vehicle in the road. If you can’t get the car out of the roadway, it may be safer to exit the car and stand at the side of the road. Trying to change a tire or service your car on a dark roadway at night can be very dangerous, and it’s best to wait until you have assistance.
Call a 24 Hour Towing Service
Once you and your car are as safe as possible, call a 24 hour towing service. Be sure to let them know if you feel unsafe in the area. Give them as much information as possible about where you are, including mile markers and/or road signs. Tell them the make and model of your car and give them a general idea of what might be wrong with it. Ask them for an estimated arrival time. If at any point you feel like your life is in danger or you’re unsafe, call 911.
Let Someone Else Know Where You Are
If possible, let a friend or relative know exactly where you are and what happened, even if it’s only via text message. Drop a pin at your location or share information about the location of your car, and give them the estimated arrival time for the tow truck. Tell them you will update them every 20 minutes or so.
