If you’re new to Arizona, or just passing through on a road trip, the last thing you want is a traffic citation or worse, an accident. Keep reading for some of Arizona’s driving safety laws as well as what to do if you have an emergency or need towing services.
DUI Enforcement
Arizona takes a zero-tolerance approach to Driving Under the Influence (DUI). If your blood-alcohol level is less than .08 percent, you will most likely be cited if it is believed that you are impaired in any way; however, over .08 percent, prepare to be fined or even jailed.
Motorcycle Helmets
Contributing to Arizona’s low highway safety ranking is the fact that helmets are only mandatory for motorcyclists 18 and under. Drivers over the age of 18 are not required to wear helmets.
Move Over Law
If you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, you should move over one lane if possible. If you cannot safely move over, you will need to slow down to at least 10 miles under the speed limit until you have completely passed the vehicle.
Road Conditions
Summer normally brings the heavy rains of monsoon season, so watch for signs indicating possible flooding. Do not attempt to drive through standing water or else you could receive a citation and be financially responsible for any emergency assistance or rescuing thanks to Arizona’s Stupid Motorist Law.
Safety Corridors
There are portions of highways where accidents are most common, so traffic enforcement is more stringent. On most highways you may sometimes have the leniency of up to 9mph over the speed limit, but in a Safety Corridor, you can be fined for moving just 1mph over the speed limit.
