How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Towing

Typically, calling a tow truck is the result of a stressful situation, like a breakdown or accident. Although these circumstances may not be ideal, getting your vehicle towed is a straightforward process, and it’s the first step to getting back on the road. There aren’t a lot of things you need to do to prepare your vehicle for towing, but these steps will help you make sure you’re ready to go when the tow truck arrives.

Make the Call

Before you do anything else with your vehicle, set up your tow. Call the towing company, describe your location and what you think is wrong with your vehicle. The tow operator may have some questions about your vehicle, so that they can be sure to bring the right equipment. If you are in a location that could complicate the towing process, like in the mountains or in a remote region, describe the area for the towing company, in case they need to make any special arrangements. Be sure to ask how long they will be. If you are in an area you believe to be unsafe, let them know, so they can expediate your service if possible.

Take Photos

It can be helpful to take some photos of your vehicle before it is towed to make a record of its condition. This is especially important if you were in a collision, but even if you weren’t, having a photo record can be useful. In the unlikely instance in which something happens to your car while it is being towed, your photos will help you and the towing company determine if any damage happened during the tow.

Gather Your Personal Belongings

The last thing you want to realize after your vehicle is towed is that you left something important, like your phone or wallet, in your car. Before the tow truck arrives, gather all of your personal items, so you’re ready to go with everything you need.
