If you get into an accident or your car breaks down, you should call a tow truck company as soon as possible to get your vehicle out of harm’s way. Be sure to follow these steps while you wait for the tow truck.
Move the Car
If possible, you should move your car to the side of the road so it is not in the way of oncoming traffic. Not only does this keep you safe from other vehicles, but it also makes it easier for the tow truck to get your vehicle when they arrive.
Turn on Your Hazard Lights
Pulling off of a road or a highway can be dangerous, which is why it is very important to turn on your hazard lights so other drivers can see your vehicle. Use reflective triangles if you have them. If you are pulled over on the side of the road, you should not exit the vehicle unless you absolutely must. Before you open your doors, you should carefully check to make sure there is no traffic coming toward your car.
Gather Your Belongings
Before the tow truck arrives, you should gather together any belongings that you will need to take with you. You cannot be sure how long you may need to keep your car in the shop, so it is important to take any belongings that you might need before you exit the vehicle.
Stay Safe
Sit in the car with the doors locked and the windows closed. If someone approaches your vehicle, you should only open the window a little to talk to them. When the tow truck company arrives, you should ask the driver for identification to be sure he or she is from the company.
