The Steps to Take When Waiting for a Tow

When the unexpected happens, and you need to have your vehicle towed, you might be feeling uncertain or vulnerable. While waiting for the tow truck, there are actions you can take to stay occupied and keep yourself safe. Keep reading to learn about the steps you can take when waiting for a tow.

Turn on hazard lights.

Turning on your hazard lights communicates to other drivers that your car is not working. Considerate drivers may check to make sure you are okay and that help is on the way, but the purpose of these lights is to make your car more visible to oncoming traffic, which is especially important if it is dark or raining. If you have never used the hazard lights, or do not know where they are, look on your car’s console and find a button with a red triangle. When you press the button, your car’s lights will begin flashing.

Move your vehicle.

If your car breaks down or you are in an accident in the middle of traffic, and you remain there, you put yourself at risk of being hit by a driver who may not be paying attention. Moving your vehicle to the shoulder of the road not only allows traffic to flow, but it will make it easier for the tow truck to get to you and help.

Get what you need.

Once your car is safely out of traffic, take the time to collect any items that you will need from your car such as your purse/wallet, phone, insurance and registration paperwork, as well as any other items you do not want to leave in the car.

Be attentive.

While waiting, lock your doors, pay attention, and be on guard with anyone who may approach your vehicle. Make sure if a tow truck arrives that it is from the company you are waiting for. If another company vehicle or driver arrives, do not open your door and just politely decline.
