Overlooked Vehicle Maintenance Tasks That Can Prevent Breakdowns

You probably know that your car needs routine oil changes to keep the engine running smoothly. However, oil changes are just one of many tasks needed to maintain your vehicle and prevent breakdowns. Few things are worse than being stranded on the side of a busy highway in Arizona during extreme summer heat, so be sure to take care of the following commonly overlooked vehicle maintenance tasks this summer. Otherwise, you may find yourself needing a towing service along with costly vehicle repairs.

Power Steering Flush

Power steering fluid creates hydraulic pressure within your power steering system to make turning your vehicle easier. This fluid also lubricates the frequently moving parts within the system to keep them moving smoothly. When power steering fluid is contaminated or has degraded over time, it needs to be flushed to keep the vehicle running smoothly.

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a power steering flush about once every 2-3 years, but you should make a habit of checking your fluid levels and looking for changes in the color of the fluid. You also should not ignore any whining noises or stiffness when attempting to steer your vehicle. If your power steering fails on the road, you may have difficulty maneuvering your vehicle, and your risk of an accident will increase substantially.

Checking Belts and Hoses

There are many moving parts under the hood of your vehicle, including numerous belts that power systems like the alternator and power steering pump. These belts may corrode or become weak over time, especially in Arizona’s extreme heat. You should check them often for signs of wear and tear. Similarly, you should check the hoses that carry liquids like antifreeze to the engine. Look for any leaks, blemishes, or cracks and visit a mechanic as soon as you spot any issues.

Aligning Wheels and Balancing Tires

You may not think twice about driving over a pothole or hitting a curb, but these actions can throw your wheels out of alignment, which can cause your vehicle to pull to one side and put premature and uneven wear on your tires. This may make you more likely to experience a blowout that could leave you stranded and waiting for a tow truck.

Balancing the tires is also important for easing the wear on your tires and protecting your vehicle’s suspension. Tires should be balanced every 6,000-8,000 miles, at which time you should have your technician check your vehicle’s alignment as well.

Cleaning Battery Terminals

Corrosion on your battery terminals can weaken electrical connections and cause the battery to die faster. In Arizona, batteries are already prone to premature wear due to extreme heat, so be sure to clean your battery terminals regularly with a mixture of baking soda and water.
